Makaton for children and young people

Communication is one of the most important skills we need through all stages of life. Everything we do involves communication: everyday tasks like asking for a drink, learning, having fun and making friends all rely on our ability to communicate with each other.

If you and your child have experienced the frustration of not being able to communicate meaningfully or effectively together, Makaton can really help. Makaton is extremely flexible and can be personalised to a child’s needs or used at a level suitable for them. It can be used to:

Make choices

Take part in games and songs

Listen to and tell stories

Label objects, pictures, photos and places

Research has shown that signs and gestures are easier to learn than spoken words.

Along with reducing frustration, using Makaton supports children with their:

Pre-verbal skills

Attention

Expression

Social skills

And supports parents by:

Increased communication skills

Increased parent-child interaction

Increased understanding of child’s needs

Reducing frustration

This Makaton training for children and young people taster session is a fun introduction for parents who want to introduce signs and support their child/young person with communication at home and is also a great refresher for those who have already completed training. In this session you will learn approx. 40 signs and symbols to support the daily routine at home. A fun, practical introduction to Makaton, its uses and how it can be implemented at home.

You will need a laptop/pc, a camera, mic and speaker (built in is fine) and you will need a copy of the booklet to work through during the training (sent out via email prior to the session)

Join us with local Makaton tutor, Ali Pennington, to find out more about this fascinating topic and how to use it with your child and young person.

This Free training workshop is for residents of North Somerset and priority will be given to parent carers of children/young people with additional needs and disabilities. Professionals working with children and young families in North Somerset are also welcome to attend
